Spatial Filter: Working Principle & Application Scenarios

1. Working Principle

A typical spatial filter consists of a focusing lens and a pinhole aperture placed precisely at the lens focal point.
Incident laser beams carry ideal fundamental frequency light and unwanted noise components such as stray light, scattered light, high-order diffraction and beam distortion.
The lens converges all light to the focal plane: the high-quality fundamental laser concentrates into a tiny central point and passes smoothly through the micro pinhole. In contrast, high-frequency noise, stray light and distorted light feature larger divergence angles, which focus outside the pinhole and are physically blocked.
By filtering high-frequency spatial noise, it restrains beam edge flare, corrects wavefront distortion, homogenizes light intensity distribution, and finally outputs a high-purity, uniform, diffraction-limited Gaussian beam.
